With two-decades as a beat cop under his belt, Jon Osborn fly fishes and bird hunts as often as possible. Author of Classic Michigan Flies – 16 Legendary Patterns (Stackpole, 2013), Jon regularly contributes to magazines such as Sporting Classics, Michigan BLUE, Pointing Dog Journal and Upland Almanac, among others. These days, he’s writing new book entitled, Flyfisher’s Guide to Michigan (Wilderness Adventures Press, 2019). A career in police work begs for balance and few pastimes fit the bill better than time spent in wild places. Fly fishing has drawn Jon to the Florida Keys flats, Wisconsin’s Driftless Region and the mountains of Colorado and Montana. That said, he’s a Michiganian to the core and loves nothing better than exploring secluded lakes and streams in his home state. Admittedly a bit eclectic, Jon prefers waxed-cotton and wool over nylon, bamboo over graphite and smokes a charred, corncob pipe. Come October, he wanders the autumn woods with a weatherworn side-by-side, insisting a quality experience is the essence of any adventure. Jon values faith, family and friends even more than hunting or fishing and shares his life with an amazing wife, two exceptional children and a hunt-crazed English setter. A close-knit circle of artists, educators, rod makers, guides and writers rank among his closest pals.
